3D gesture recognition technology based on electrostatic capacitive touch detection

I. Introduction

3D gesture recognition is increasingly being used in home appliances, automobiles, and industrial equipment. Taking home appliances as an example, in many cases, people prefer non-contact control. For example, when using a range hood, the user's hands are usually wet or greasy. Using 3D gesture control can avoid direct contact with the range hood and control it from a certain distance. Similarly, in smart home applications such as smart toilets, smart faucets, and smart refrigerators, 3D gesture recognition also has the advantages of being more convenient, hygienic, and efficient.

2. Renesas Electronics 3D Gesture Recognition Reference Solution

Renesas Electronics provides two 3D gesture recognition reference solutions. One is a 16×16cm electrode reference solution with RX231 as the control MCU, and the recognition distance of the Z axis is 20cm. The other is an 8×8cm electrode reference solution with RX130 as the control MCU, and the recognition distance of the Z axis is 10cm. The minimum recognition accuracy of the X/Y/Z axis can reach 1mm. The two 3D gesture recognition reference solutions are shown in Figure 8. The complete schematic diagram, component list and PCB reference size are provided on the official website of Renesas Electronics. Renesas Electronics provides X/Y/Z coordinate calculation software with open code, and gesture recognition codes such as up, down, left, right, press down, clockwise rotation and counterclockwise rotation are provided in the form of software libraries. In addition, the host computer monitoring software "3D Monitor" is also provided, as shown in Figure 9

Conclusion

Using electrostatic capacitive touch detection technology, non-contact 3D gesture recognition can be achieved. Compared with infrared, ultrasonic or video gesture recognition, 3D gesture recognition based on electrostatic capacitive touch detection has the advantages of low cost, unaffected by light, and not afraid of occlusion. The electrode panel can be covered with a variety of non-conductive materials such as glass, acrylic, plastic, wood, stone, etc., and has good application prospects.
